It's a Board Game Break!
10 years is not a really short time. Not very long in the grand scheme, but it's been that and more since I've been making videos. Unfortunately, I've had to come to the decision that it's time for a formal break.
I know there isn't a huge number of you folks out there regularly checking out my stuff, but you also deserve to know at least a bit of what's going on. Board games are amazing and literally changed my life - I wanted to try and pass on at least some of that feeling to others as well. Unfortunately, it's gotten to the point where the time and effort costs of making these videos just isn't sustainable right now.
I do hope for this to be strictly temporary, though I couldn't say how long it may be. Regardless, I'm going to be around and try to post some flashbacks/still reply to any new comments on my older stuff. I also hope that you'll all continue to spread the good word that is hobby board gaming, and try to get more people involved!

Top 5 Novel Based Board Games

It's something that I, and others, have talked a good bit about before, but one that keeps coming up regardless - intellectual properties being shoehorned into games. In this case, let's take a look particularly at fictional novels that actually did a GOOD job of it! Making a game based off another IP can be nearly impossible. Capturing the original spirit, complexity, scope, etc., is nearly im...

Top 5 Most Played Board Games in March 2023

Time for a new sort of look at the gaming community - internally! What are gamers up do, and how often? There's an awful lot of data out there if you know where to look and how to access it, so let's take a look at (statistically) March's most popular games! BoardGameGeek is a lot more than a way to find and talk about games you both love and hate. There's a lot of random do-dad information and...

It seems that I've been doing this for too long and may have a repeat. Can you spot it?? Either way, it's not technically the beginning of the month, but close enough to have a video on 5-ish games that I haven't talked about but would really like to play! Sometimes we all get confused - there's too many Kickstarted, eBay biddings, random sales online and in-store, there's just a lot of games o...
Top 5 Games About Collecting

It's meta-o-clock! Well, at least to an extent. I've talked a lot about collecting games in what I think of it all personally, how I decide what to get, and generally being a gaming packrat. We continue in what feels to be a quickly passing year to bring another round of new, upcoming, recent, and general FOMO games! Always fun to find, see, and discuss, let me know what you've found recently! Ever growing and expanding, I'm always looking for new board games to hit the market and (hopefully) play and own one day. Some I love for the theme, others the mechanics, others the concepts...
Top 5 Lore-Heavy Board Games

The vast majority of board games have at least some form of lore and background info to "set the scene". Let's face it, though, there's some that go a lot heavier and further than others. Though it's a cooler time of the year as far as announcements are concerned, there's still plenty on the slate to see! Top 5 Worker Placement Board Games

Probably one of the most often seen mechanics in board gaming, worker placement involves using pieces/dice/etc., to indicate an action and/or activity a player will take. I'm very new to craft board games in general, so my exposure is pretty limited. So far the only AI system I've experienced is the one in Caesar! From the 20 minutes series, and I have to say that while initially put off I really enjoy it. Having watched a bunch of videos on blitzkrieg, also from the 20 minute series I have to say that that game is now on my wish list! Smittybit on boardgamegeek

If a group is neutralized I know its puppet groups become neutral "unowned" groups but does the master/puppet chain remain or does the chain become undone and everything goes independent? Simular if a group is destroyed, is the whole chain rendered out of play?

    • @DannyCGamingFandomandScience
      @DannyCGamingFandomandScience 3 місяці тому

Whether it's neutralize or destroy, anything attached just becomes neutral again and back to the middle. In the case of destroyed, only the targeted group is truly eliminated.

Re Terraforming Mars: it's not villages in the Andes, it's cities such as La Paz, the capital of Boliva. It is 14% oxygen, but when I was there the only time I noticed it was when I was walking uphill and tried to eat at the same time and found myself short of breath, so totally comfortable for day to day life.

I played a lot of Cosmic Encounter in the 1980s, and Illuminati borrowed many aspect of its game play from CE. Steve Jackson in an article on the designed of Illuninati said: "It should be a multi-player game. I'm a great admirer of Eon's Cosmic Encounter. I decided to go for the same free-wheeling, back-stabbing play style. Another similarity to CE was the idea that each player would have his own special power. Illuminati takes this even farther than CE, though: each player has his own victory condition, too! Thus, each player has slightly different aims in any given transaction. "

The Duke works well as amprint and play though ive never been spoiled with the real wood pieces. I drew up the pieces in inkscape and printed them quarter size and laminated them. Publisher has larger ones available on BGG.. I was afraid it would be awkward with the tiny flat pieces but didnt have a problem. Printing on the cheaper paper worked better actually because I could cut the laminate a lot closer to the card

I worked for dream pod 9 for the heavy gear blitz line and did con work if I was trying to tell a say anime fan what heavy gear blitz it I'd say armored troopers Votoms but like battlefield tactics with everything from tanks to heli gunships to infantry to the gears which you can go from recon to heavy armory and artillery types to freaking paratrooper mecha to the usually 2 to 3 man crewed striders i personally like this more than battle tech and mech warrior. The gears are like 8 to 12 feet tall also I've been chatting to the creator of this game that is pretty much like armored core and all the arms, legs, cores, and they are attached with mini magnets instead of gluing so every match you can have a entirely new loadout. Message me if you would care to learn more. I'm even trying to design my own mecha tabletop. And I could use brainstormers to help flesh out the world, cities, pmc and official country military, world history and tech level and application. Go to Reddit and msg me my username is Enemy__Crab (2 underscore between "enemy" and "crab") take care

Just saw this 3 years late but I wanted ti add my 2 cents. 5) Arkham never played, I have the Elder Signs dice game and that scratch that itch, 4) Champions have not played it, 3) Game of throne. This brings up sore subject I bought 1st Ed then after buy the Deluxe expansion the came out with 2nd edition. They should have made and upgrade kit. Liked the game though. I refused to buy the 2nd. 2) Netrunner played it once though it was good but not solo playable. 1) just got the LOTR revised edtion. Glad I waited. I like the game. Would have been mad had FFG nailed me again. But at least with this you can upgrade. HM I have the Mage Wars and I do like it a lot. Here are some not on the list I like in no particular order. Vs 2pcg, Star Wars LCG, Doomtown Reloaded and one of my favorites Warhammer 40K: Conquest. Unfortunately no longer availavblr due to licencing

Thanks so much for the insight and sharing your picks! I feel you on the GoT aspect and new editions; I had the same pain not with LCGs, but board games like Camel Up, Kingsburg, Dominion, and a handful of others. 2nd+ editions tend to drive me nuts, though a few are worth it IMO. Not having upgrade packs is a big no-no, I agree fully on that. I've wanted to try the SW LCG, but haven't pulled the trigger. Mostly because I'm wondering about if/when we'd see expansions. So ripe for all sorts of cool stuff, but no telling.

3rd edition healthy heart hospital was just released. Just a quick fyi. Yes, it was tongue-in-cheek when first developed, and victory point games took it further with the art. Sparkworks is doing the 3rd edition, under the umbrella of Tabletop Tycoon. Same tongue-in-cheek, more characters that you might recognize from modern tv shows. Happy to see you l like running around the corridors of Healthy Heart Hospital.

It has been a while that I have not watched your videos, but it was great to watch one again. I enjoyed it a lot. Here is my list, which has been trimmed down to games that I own in Spanish, because those are the ones I mainly play with other people: 1. The Adventures of Robin Hood: I loved Robin Hood as a kid. I love Legends of Andor. It was almost impossible for me to not like this game. It is aimed at families with little kids and it has no real replayability, but I enjoyed a lot playing through it. 2. Tales of the Arabian Nights: Pure storytelling fun if you forget about the competition and just enjoy the stories. 3. Middle Earth Quest: Amazing adventure game / wargame that tells the story after The Hobbit but before The Lord of the Rings. 4. Unlock: The Adventurers of Oz: It is a great experience for anyone that loves the book. It has aspects that don't appear in the movie. The game is gorgeous. 5. Exit: Dead Man in the Orient Express: Great mistery solving experience. Cheers!

Glad that you were able to catch a video! I've had to step back a good bit from my video making in favor of other work, both day job and more hobbies. I don't want to quit the channel by any means, but it can be difficult sometimes. And a very interesting list, as well - I'm particularly surprised by having Unlock and Exit, since the style is so niche. I haven't played either, but heard particularly good things about Orient Express and its similarity to the original story. As for the other 3, Adventures of Robin Hood has been on my list for... I don't know how long, but since I learned of it. Same for Arabian Nights. Love both stories' concepts and would be so excited to play them. Maybe someday. Middle Earth Quest is an interesting one - I tend to enjoy games that take place outside the canonical story(ies) time period(s), well before, after, in-between, or some combo. It's nice to have the recognizable environments, types of characters, and feel, without necessarily being chained to a heavily-specific canon and story.

While I had a big problem with the game itself, I found that the old 1979 Avalon Hill Dune was INCREDIBLY successful at capturing the theme. The special abilities of each faction felt so right to anyone who had read the novels. Did I enjoy the game? Kinda. So I loved most of the game play itself, except how the game ends. But I always felt the way the game would end as being incredibly anticlimactic. So after two disappointing games, I stopped wanting to play it. But it does really capture the feel of the books. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, and granted, when I got the game, I had only seen the TV show and hadn't yet read any of the books. But The Expanse (2017, not to be confused with two other earlier games with the same name) is definitely a game that I want to play. I've actually going through the series recently (I'm up to book 6 of 9). If I ever get a chance to play it, I'll probably be able to say more. I do remember some positive reviews though from back when it was released. I definitely do recommend both the old TV series ,as well as the books (I will say that the earlier books, so far, have been better than the later ones, especially since the books get especially dark by volume 5). Arrakis : Dawn of the Fremen is not exactly based on the books, because it takes place years before either the Harkonnens or Atreides come to Arrakis. It's kind of a meta-fictional game in that way (fiction within fiction). This is another game that I REALLY want to play. Although I did play the game that it is modeled after, "Borderlands", which I loved back in the day. The original game was designed by the Cosmic Encounter team, and was fairly innovative for its time. A couple of elements from the expansions did manage to break the game (imho). But I loved the original game.

I do agree with you on the original Dune - it took me some time but I tracked down a copy for display purposes. It does certainly fit the book(s), but I did want to keep things to more modern and accessible games for the sake of ease. Maybe not the best decision, but still. I'm not familiar with The Expanse, either literary or otherwise. Reading a quick brief on it certainly has me intrigued, but both my reading and watching lists are pretty enormous already :D . Not sure how well more can fit in. Also haven't heard of Dawn of the Fremen, but I do often like pre or post "main" time period games. I'm playing a run through of The Witcher: Old World set many years before Geralt and ilk, but still very much feels like a Witcher game/book/environment. Those types are nice in the sense that you don't have to worry nearly as much about some sort of screen/book accuracy with things, but is more about the overall environmental feel of the whole. Very cool. As always, thanks so much for the comment!
